What would Jesus Undo?
- Jesus would undo indifference
- Jesus would undo hollow worship
- Jesus would undo hypocrisy
16 Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good. – Titus 1:16 NLT
Hypocrisy is not the disparity between what we do and what we wish we did.
Hypocrisy is the gap between what we show and who we are.
The number one complaint against the church from the unchurched is…. HYPOCRISY.
The word hypocrisy comes from hupokrites – which means an actor, a stage player, one who hides behind a mask. The difference between PRIVATE CHARACTER and PUBLIC PERSONA.
Jesus never spoke more clearly and HARSHLY than to hypocrites (Matthew 23)
23 Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.
25 Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and self-indulgence!
27 Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity. 28 Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.
29 Hypocrites! For you build tombs for the prophets your ancestors killed, and you decorate the monuments of the godly people your ancestors destroyed.
32 Go ahead and finish what your ancestors started. 33 Snakes! Sons of vipers! How will you escape the judgment of hell?
Avoiding hypocrisy is not a matter of PERFECTION.
Here’s what Jesus is saying – Don’t be a public super hero, and act like you’re not HUMAN.
Jesus has zero tolerance for hypocrisy. He has unlimited grace for a sinner in need of forgiveness.
- I’d rather be an HONEST SINNER than a LYING HYPOCRITE.
Drop the mask, confess to God, and confess to the RIGHT people.
23 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-23
- We don’t close the gaps with PERFECTION
- We close the gaps with CHRIST
Stop trying to be a good Christian. We aren’t good! Live forgiven! Live graceful! Love authentically!
The Pharisee Hypocrisy
- Give to be thanked
- Fast to be noticed
- Pray to be heard
- Love with restrictions
- Criticize to be known wise
- Take advantage of the poor to show power
The Jesus Way
- Give to be worshipful
- Fast to be spiritually nourished
- Pray to be connected to God
- Love with reckless abandon
- Construct to be built
- Serve to be humble
Live your life so blessed, that when people mention you, they are forced to mention Jesus.
